October is Canadian Islamic History Month, and this year’s theme is Islamic Calligraphy. At AZIA, our students spent the month getting to know five famous scripts: Kufic, Naskh, Thuluth, Nastaliq and Diwani.
New posters in our hallways introduced the five scripts, and our teachers shared them in class. Then our front hall got a new look: the Meet the Scripts! wall. Each script has its own colourful paper-collage column, where it introduces itself (“Hi! I’m Kufic!”), shows a meaningful word written in its own style, shares a few fun facts and ends with a small “Try it!” challenge. The five words are sabr (patience) in Kufic, iqra (read) in Naskh, Bismillah in Thuluth, mehrabani (kindness) in Nastaliq and salam (peace) in Diwani.
From October 14 to 22, our classes visited the wall on a short field trip. Students met each script with a movement of its own, then played Who Gets the Job? Which script should write the golden verses on the cover of the Ka’bah? A Grade 1 student’s first Qur’an? A word built into the bricks of a new masjid? Students searched the wall for clues, and for the trickier jobs they explained their choice. For the last job, each student hired a script to write their own name.
Thank you to our teachers for bringing their classes to the wall and leading the visits. If you are at the school, stop by the front hall and ask your child to show you their favourite script.
May Allah (SWT) fill our children’s hearts with love for the beauty of His words.
