Terumi Kataoka

Ms. Terumi Kataoka was born and raised in Mexico City and moved to Vancouver to attend the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 2004. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in History. While finishing her studies she was able to discover her love of learning and teaching life long learning skills to young children. In 2011, she graduated with a Bachelor of Education from UBC. Since then, Ms. Terumi has worked as a daycare supervisor in Edmonton, Alberta. Before coming to Az-Zahraa Islamic Academy (AZIA) she was teaching full day Kindergarten at BC Muslim School for two years. This year, Ms. Terumi will be teaching the Grade One class! She is very happy to join the school community at AZIA and to continue growing professionally as an educator.

Ms. Terumi believes that the most important years in a child?s education are their first years spent in school. As a teacher she shares the privilege of looking over these young children in their emotional, physical and intellectual growth throughout the academic year. Students that feel supported by their families and school will be focused on their learning goals and accomplish more challenges with confidence. It is her job as an educator to create opportunities for her students to feel connected to their learning and we must reflect back their culture, community and surroundings to create a sense of curiosity and begin nurturing their love for life long learning. Reflecting back an image of success, positivity, happiness and fulfillment is what creates meaningful connections in their lives.

Ms. Terumi loves to travel and is always thinking of a new destination to explore. She is fluent in Spanish and Japanese and would love to share her language skills with the students at AZIA if they will teach her some Arabic in return!
