Sukaina Jaffer

Sr. Sukaina Jaffer graduated from Simon Fraser University (S.F.U.) with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biological Sciences. Subsequently, she completed the Professional Development Program at S.F.U. and obtained her BC Teaching Certificate. Prior to joining the Az-Zahraa Islamic Academy, Sr. Sukaina taught in B.C. public schools at both the elementary and high school levels.

Sr. Sukaina was the Grade 4/5 co-teacher at AZIA for 6 years before accepting the position of the Lead Learning Support (Resource) Teacher, which she has held for the past 4 years. With her more than 20 years of teaching experience and background in working with students of various learning styles, Sr. Sukaina developed a program to enhance student learning by working with classroom teachers and parents to plan, implement and support individual student needs. Last year, Sr. Sukaina retruned to co-teaching the Grade 5 class, while continuing in her role as the Special Education and Islamic Studies Coordinator.

Her past involvement in the Richmond Teacher’s Network Group has given her the opportunity to develop strategies for mentoring new teachers entering the profession and being a workshop presenter at the Richmond District Teacher’s Convention. Three years ago, Sr. Sukaina was recognized by B.C.’s Lieutenant Governor and Speaker of the B.C. Legislative Assembly for collaborative, cooperative and innovative teaching excellence.  Last year, she was invited by the Speaker of the House to return to Victoria as a facilitator for the Teacher’s Institute on Parliamentary Democracy.  She also served as the only Independent School Teacher from across the province to serve on a 12 member B.C. Science Curriculum Development Team to draft the new curriculum. Subsequently, she presented a full-day workshop for the Catholic Independent Schools of Vancouver Archdiocese about the transforming BC Science Curriculum.

In her spare time, Sr. Sukaina hosts visitors to the Az-Zahraa Islamic Centre to learn about Islam.  For the past 10 years, she has been repeatedly invited to instruct an “Introduction to Islam” course through Burnaby Continuing Education. She is a member of the Teacher Support Team at the Madrasah Az-Zahraa. Sr. Sukaina enjoys travelling and spending time with family and friends. Her passion for her faith is evident and it serves as an inspiration for her students and staff alike.  Sr. Sukaina is humbled to have the opportunity of nurturing “taqwa” and a strong Islamic identity for her students and feels very privileged, blessed and excited about her 10th year at Az-Zahraa Islamic Academy.
