OUR EARLY HISTORY

In the year 2000, there was vision to start a Shia Muslim Elementary School in Richmond, BC. Under the leadership of Br. Mohamed A. Dewji a school board was formed comprising of Br. Rizwan Hemraj, Br. Riyaz Devji, Br. Minaz Fazal, Br. Mahmood Merali, Sis. Navshina Savory and Sis. Kaniz Jetha. The School Board worked tirelessly to ensure that the vision became a reality and by the grace of the Almighty (SWT), the Az-Zahraa Islamic Academy (AZIA) opened its doors for the first time on the 5th of Rajab, 1424 (September 2, 2003).

The first pioneers of the Academy consisted of 15 Montessori students (4 of which Kindergarten students) and 12 Grade 1/Grade 2 students. In its inaugural year, the staff consisted of three teachers Br. Jafferali Mussa, Grade 1/2 teacher as well as the Head Teacher of AZIA, Sis. Shahin Virji, Montessori/Kindergarten Directress and Sis. Fatima Sheriff, Montessori Teacher Assistant and Islamic Studies Instructor.

The School’s Motto is “Rabbi Zidni Ilman Walhiqni Bis Swaliheen” “My Lord, increase me in knowledge and make me of the virtuous”. The school became a fundamental part of the beautiful multi-purpose complex at the Az-Zahraa Islamic Centre, in Richmond BC. The school facility included 8 full size classrooms, 8 small group instruction rooms, a computer lab, a library, an assembly area, a cafeteria and a full size gymnasium.

Towards the end of its foundational year, a playground was built after a successful fundraiser. A brick pillar wall has been constructed near the gymnasium honouring the school’s pioneer students as well as those who generously donated towards the playground. At the end of its first year AZIA was registered as an Independent School under the auspices of the Office of Independent Schools BC Ministry of Education. It was classified as a Group 1 school under British Columbia’s Independent School Act.

Az-Zahraa Islamic Academy has steadily grown over the years and offers a Montessori Reggio Inspired Jr. Kindergarten program as well as a full BC elementary curriculum (KG - Gr. 7) supplemented with an Islamic studies, Qur’an and Arabic curriculum within an Islamic environment. A natural grass playing field and outdoor basketball court have been added to complement the playground and enhance the students’ physical educational requirements.

In 2013, after yet another successful fundraiser AZIA purchased a 72 passenger school bus which is used daily to transport students to and from school as well as for fieldtrips.

Currently, in its 14th year, AZIA under the leadership of Mr. Oscar Pozzolo (Principal) has 139 students and a team of 15 staff members.
